YOUR "STYLE" IS THE KEY TO YOUR SUCCESS

Updated: Jan 29, 2020

Over the past few days, I’ve been studying Nigerian painters HEAVY.

In video, on the gram, the internet blogs…and one recurring theme I kept encountering was the importance of developing and nurturing one’s “style” as an artist.

Your style is what will draw your crowd and potentially the success you crave.

It IS your niche.

It is your unique way of seeing and your painterly expression of this is what will draw them to you.

This is something I struggle with completely.

Which is why I reckon it’s harder for people to situate themselves with me and my work.

I like creating a variety of work and I can see the effects of that… there are none or the effects in the form of "sales" are few and far in between.

Some of the most popular artists today can be distinguished by their style, because they’ve established it early and rarely deviate from it.

I would implore you to do the same.

It may take time to find it because once you settle on it, you’ll be chained to it or the presumption is that you have to be.

It’s sorta like when an entertainer decides after 3 albums to do something completely different for their 4th which fans almost never go for.

Customer’s like familiarity and in a way associate themselves with you on a deeper level when they love what you do. Basically, you'll be put in a box...but only for a while.

It's up to you to create a relationship with your customer that will allow for your freedoms to be expressed as you please with them adorning it at every step.

That’s it…just something I was thinking about and wanted to share.

This will probably be the first of many for a new series I want to write, entitled, "How to Fail as An Artist".

A series based on my own personal experiences in the art game. One that has had some successes but mostly fails.

Let me know your thoughts!

Comment below.

Also, here is a little something I watched during my obsession phase about art in Nigeria...it’s a 3 part series you might enjoy and be inspired by.
